LG has announced today that it has started mass production on what it calls the world’s first flexible electronic paper display.

LG claims the 6-inch XGA (1024 x 768), eInk, plastic e-paper display is expected to revolutionize the eBook market with its advancement in functionality and design.

The e-paper display offers users a paper-like reading experience with a plastic feel that is as slim as a cell phone protection screen. The display is also flexible and allows bending at a range of 40 degrees from the center of the screen.

Compared to glass e-paper displays, of similar resolution, the LG e-paper display measures at 0.7 mm, a third slimmer than glass displays. The LG e-paper display weighs 14 g, more than 50% lighter than the glass e-paper displays.

LG claims it has manufactured its plastic e-paper display to be lighter, thinner, more durable, and can withstand temperatures exceeding 350 degrees. When dropped from 1.5 meters above the ground, the display showed no damage.

The world’s first plastic e-paper display by LG will first be supplied to ODM companies in China, followed by completed products to be released in Europe at the beginning of April.
