Orb Networks has just introduced an application for the Apple iPad that lets users placeshift, or stream stored, personal content, live TV, and internet TV streams from their home PC to their mobile device.
Placeshifting is basically watching or listening to live, recorded or stored media on a remote and often mobile device via the Internet or over a data network.
Orb Live is designed to allow users to placeshift their digital media collection stored on their PC, web-cam feeds, live TV, and internet TV and stream any content they wish to their phones and personal devices. It also lets users channel internet TV content from their PC to Orb-enabled devices.
The software works with any iPad, Android phone, iPhone and iPod Touch. It has been optimized for transmission over Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE networks, so it takes advantage of the latest iPad wireless enhancements. It is available for $9.99 from the Apple App Store.
Hauppauge Digital, which makes TV tuners that work with Orb software to channel live TV programming to iPads and other mobile devices, also got into the software end of the business last month with the introduction of WinTV v7.2. This is an application that placeshifts a live TV signal to an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac or PC computer over either a home WiFi connection or over the Internet.
It is priced at $9.95 (plus shipping), and supports WinTV-HVR digital TV tuners in the U.S., and WinTV-NOVA and WinTV-MiniStick products in Europe and Asia.
