Microsoft currently offers three different operating systems, but this will change soon. CEO Satya Nadella promises that these are going to be merged into one.

Microsoft Windows LogoThe company offers the standard version of Windows for PCs, notebooks, and tablets. Additionally, it produces Windows RT for tablets and Windows Phone for smartphones.

In the past, there have been hints and rumors that Microsoft would simplify its offerings, but Nadella has now spelled it out unequivocally.

“We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes,” Nadella said.

The Microsoft chief did not go into additional details on exactly how the merger will work. One of the challenges will be supporting two very different types of processors: Windows runs on x86 chips, while Windows RT and Windows Phone use ARM processors.

Nadella also promised that this will have a positive impact on the entire Windows community.

“We will unify our stores, commerce, and developer platforms to drive a more coherent user experience and a broader developer opportunity,” Nadella said.

wrong, that’s what you think he said.
what he actually said is that the base code for software and apparently etc is now all the same,by,therefore Ms can have one group of developers doing all’s and software, which will then be “tweaked”for the devices apparently etc. are meant to run on.
what he did Blythe say is that Ms 9 will be a proper,”real”universal is,you will not be able to take the os as installed to a mobile phone and somehow copy to a desktop over and the over would just run the same is software.
it would be nice if they did actually do a uni os, it might be enough to save Ms,but not holding my breathe waiting.
