Microsoft Open to a Wide Range of Windows Tablets; Is a Surface Mini in Development?

A high-level Microsoft executive says that his company is prepared for Windows devices in a wide range of sizes.

Microsoft Surface ProMicrosoft CFO Peter Klein, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, said:

“We can have the same core code base driving form factors from four inches all the way up to 27-inch ones and everything in between. So I think we are well set up to respond to demand as we see it. We can deliver a versatile set of experiences across form factors, whether they’re 4-inch, 5-inch, 7-inch, 10-inch or 13-inch.”

Klein was referring to the fact that Windows Phone and Windows share the same code base. And the company is working to bring these two operating systems closer together.

What’s not clear is if Microsoft itself intends to make devices in the range Klein described, or if he simply meant that Microsoft will develop the operating systems and let others develop the hardware.

Back in the days when Microsoft was a software company, there would have been no question about its plans, but the release of the Microsoft Surface tablets raises the possibility that the company might be working on other devices, like a 7-inch model or a Surface-branded smartphone.
