It wasn’t announced at the press event Microsoft held yesterday, but the head of development for Microsoft’s own line of tablets has committed to a version of the Surface 2 with 4G LTE built in.

Microsoft Surface 2Microsoft took the wraps off the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 in New York City. These Wi-Fi-only tablets will replace models the company introduced in late 2012 and early this year.

A few hours later, during a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Panos Panay said, “We didn’t talk about it today, but Surface 2 will be launching an awesome LTE SKU early next year!”

The Surface 2 is the Windows RT-based tablet Microsoft unveiled on Monday. Panay made no mention of an LTE-enabled version of the Surface Pro 2, which will run Windows 8.1 Pro.
