There is good news and bad news for those who want an LTE-enabled version of a Microsoft tablet: one will be released by AT&T, but it won’t be the Surface Pro 2.

Microsoft Surface 2Panos Panay, the head of development for the Surface line, revealed this week that AT&T and Vodafone will offer a version of the Surface 2 with built-in 4G access.

This device is going to run Windows RT 8.1, the version of this operating system designed for ARM processors. Panay said there are no plans for a version of the Windows 8.1-based Surface Pro 2 with LTE.

The Microsoft exec said the 4G version of the Surface 2 will be available in the first part of 2014. He also raised the possibility that it might be offered by other wireless telecoms.
