Microsoft put its Surface tablet with Windows RT up for pre-order on its website yesterday. Less than a day later, one version is already sold out.
Three vesions of this tablet will debut on October 26, the same day as their operating system. The most afforable of these will have 32GB of storage, and will sell for $500. It’s this version that is already sold out. Microsoft says that orders placed now will ship in 2-3 weeks.
The other versions are still available. This includes a $600 one with 32GB of storage and a Smart Cover — a combination keyboard and cover. The third version has 64GB of storage and a Smart Cover for $700.
More about the Surface Series
There will be two distinctly different versions of Microsoft’s tablet. One of these will be based on the new Windows RT which was designed for ARM processors. The other, expected out next year, will run the full version of Windows 8 Pro on an x86 processor.
Despite their differences, the two editions of the Surface will have a certain amount in common, including a 10.6-inch display and support for the Smart Cover.
The device will be sold only in Microsoft’s own stores, and there won’t be a version with cellular-wireless connectivity. Instead, this will be a Wi-Fi only tablet.
