Those shopping for a Surface RT no longer have to go to a Microsoft store, because Best Buy will soon begin offering it. And that’s no the only option — as announced yesterday, Staples introduced the tablet this morning.

Microsoft Surface RTSince its debut, the Surface RT could only be purchased directly from Microsoft’s own retail stores or its website. This policy has now been changed.

As this Windows 8 RT device will on the showroom floors of major electronics retailers, sales are likely to increase. So far, sales have been somewhat slow, something many analysts have chalked up to limited availability, not bad design.

More about this Tablet

As the name implies, the Surface RT runs Windows 8 RT, rather than a pure version of Windows 8. While this variation on Windows 8 is built to support ARM-based chips and provide better battery life, it does have certain shortcomings, such as the inability to any apps other than those found in the Windows Store.

It has a 10.6-inch display. Optional cases can do double-duty as keyboards.

Staples and Best Buy are matching Microsoft’s pricing, not undercutting it. This means that this tablet starts at $500, no matter where it’s sold.
