Microsoft to Launch Its Own Windows 8 Tablet?

The industry at large did not expect Microsoft to build a Windows 8 tablet of its own, but instead expected the software giant to pass along its OS to various hardware manufacturers and sit back and let Windows slates roll out. One source, however, implicates that Microsoft might be proceeding with its own branded tablet.

Windows 8 LogoThe folks at DigiTimes started the rumor, claiming their informants as “sources from the upstream supply chain.” According to the DigiTimes’ information, Microsoft will partner with Texas Instruments, which will manufacture what would be an ARM-designed chip for the tablet.

DigiTimes also points to devices like the Microsoft Xbox and (recently deceased) Microsoft Zune as examples of Microsoft taking an (often failed) hands-on approach to hardware and branding. DigiTimes’ sources feel, however, that Microsoft will not be pushing its tablet too hard, and that it will be “proceeding on a low profile.”

With Windows 8 not expected any time this year, any device with the OS, built by Microsoft or not, is still just a gleam on the horizon.
