Microsoft Xbox Surface Gaming Tablet Rumors Heat Up

Microsoft Xbox Surface TabletFollowing rumors and a leaked document back in June, there is more word from inside sources that Microsoft does, in fact, have a 7-inch gaming tablet in the works.

“The Xbox Surface”, as it’s tentatively being called, will not run a full version of Windows, but rather it will sport a custom Windows kernel. It’s possible that certain features like messaging and “other tablet functions” may be available on the 7-inch tablet, but the device’s intended purpose is for gaming.

As far as the hardware is concerned, the inside sources informed The Verge that the initial specs on the document leaked back in June were accurate. These included a touchscreen with a minimum resolution of 1280 x 720 as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Other features on the leaked specs list are an SD card slot, support for up to four wireless game controllers, 4 USB 3.0 ports, and HDMI out,

It will supposedly include an AMD GPU and two IBM POWER7 SCMs (six cores per SCM) running at 3.1GHz. Although the Xbox Surface will “likely” be powered by a custom ARM processor, The Verge notes that the specs could be changed to accommodate an unannounced Intel SoC (though the sources claim the tablet is being manufactured independently of specific hardware architecture).
