Microsoft Admits Vista has Speech Recognition Defect
Microsoft has admitted that the speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders. In one scenario outlined by users an MP3 file of voice instructions was used to tell the PC to delete documents. Microsoft is telling users that it is technically possible, but there is no need to worry. Microsoft has pointed out that in order for the flaw to be exploited the speech recognition feature would need to be activated and configured with both microphone and speakers switched to on. This could be a serious problem for Tablet PC users since on Tablets the speaker and microphone are usually both enabled, which means it’s possible a malicious website or MP3 file could say these “delete” commands to delete critical files.
