Roper Mobile Technology unveils Duros Rugged Tablet PC

Today Roper Mobile Technology unveiled the Duros Rugged Tablet PC. Roper Mobile bought out Black Diamond a while ago, the makers of the Switchback, so they are familiar with the rugged tablet market. The Duros is sealed to IP-65 levels for dust and water ingress and tested to MIL STD 810F for vibration, functional shock, high and low temperatures and drops.

It comes equipped with an 8.4-inch brilliant sunlight viewable, SVGA resistive touchscreen and an AMD Geode LX 800 processor or an Intel Celeron M 1.0GHz. The Duros packs up to 1GB memory and up to 120GB storage (up to 64GB solid state drive is available). Its hot swappable battery feature diminishes downtime and provides continuous battery life, making it great for on-the-go use and in those harsh environments.

Notebook makers approve of Intel’s choice; by changing the name, it will increase brand recognition and hopefully increase demand.

Intel is planning to officially launch the Montevina platform at Computex Taipei 2008. It did not comment on the Centrino 2 branding.

Toshiba discontinues HD DVD

Toshiba has given up the format war and will no longer be pursuing the HD DVD business. It will still support all existing HD DVD products. The firm will cease shipping players and recorders by the end of March 2008 and end production of the products around the same time.

Toshiba is still committed to the standard DVD format, and will maintain the relations it formed with various companies while developing HD DVD.
