Environmentally Friendly Computers Rise in Popularity
A growing interest in environmentally friendly "green" computers has resulted in more than 300 computers being registered with EPEAT, the new EPA-funded green computer standard released in July. Nine manufacturers currently participate in the program including Apple, Sony, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, Panasonic, NEC, Northern Micro Inc. and CTL Corporation.
Many of these manufactures’ products have silver ratings like Lenovo’s ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC. This means that the product meets all required criteria plus at least 50 percent of the optional criteria that apply to the product type being registered. Compared to traditional computer equipment, all EPEAT-registered computers have reduced levels of cadmium, lead and mercury to better protect human health and the environment. They are more energy efficient and easier to upgrade and recycle. In fact, manufacturers must offer safe recycling options for EPEAT registered products.
