Check out this red Panasonic CF-28 touchscreen notebook. One of our forum users over on my sister site, NotebookReview.com, has turned this bland Toughbook into a big red machine. It has started a great discussion in the forums and the owner even explains how he powdercoated it. LiveScribe Pulse Smartpen, a new spin on writing

LiveScribe recently introduced the Pulse smartpen. This innovative pen puts a new twist on the good old pen and paper phenomenon. New York Times writer, David Pogue, had the opportunity to check one out. The pen is about as thick as a Sharpie, has a camera, microphone and surprisingly loud speaker. It also has a bright black-and-white screen (18 x 96 pixels) that displays messages, menu commands and even little animations. There’s a nonremovable, rechargeable battery (6 to 7 hours a charge), a headphone jack and contacts for a USB charging cradle. And it’s also a ballpoint pen. Wow, the future of pen-computing is really changing.

Fujitsu partners with Socket Mobile to improve mobile data collection

Socket Mobile and Fujitsu recently announced a partnership and plans for joint product offerings aimed at improving mobile data collection in a variety of industries including retail, but with hopes of extending into healthcare and automotive. Combining the mobile data collection capabilities of Socket Mobile with the tablet and ultra-mobile computing expertise of Fujitsu will offer solutions for improving customer service.

The partnership has created a payment solution for the retail industry that enables workers in a retail environment to scan bar codes, swipe credit cards and finalize sales from anywhere in the store. The combined solution features the Socket Mobile CF Mag Stripe Reader, which reads and transfers magnetic stripe data into any Windows application running on the Fujitsu LifeBook P1620 tablet PC, creating a mobile Point of Sale (POS) terminal.
