Nokia is reportedly re-starting its project that will result in the smartphone company introducing a tablet running Windows RT.

Windows 8 start screenThe Finnish company started work on this device earlier in the year, but this allegedly stopped when the Microsoft Surface was announced. Apparently, Nokia was concerned about directly competing with Microsoft in the tablet market.

The project is back on, however, according to DigiTimes. Nokia will allegedly unveil a 10-inch tablet at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.

Windows RT is the consumer-oriented version of Windows 8 designed to run on ARM processors. Tablets running it are typically less expensive than ones with the regular version, but can’t run software written for previous iterations of Windows.

Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT

Smartphones from Nokia run Windows Phone, which Microsoft specifically created for this class of devices. Unlike Apple iOS or Google Android, Windows Phone can’t be extended to run on a tablet. That’s why Microsoft created Windows RT.

Nokia is apparently going to become one of a number of companies tha offer both phones and tablets, including Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and RIM.
