Front-lit screens that allow eReader owners to read in the dark without external illumination seem to be the new trend in the device category.

Last week, TechCrunch reported that the next Amazon Kindle might be getting an integrated front-light in its display so that people can read in the dark. A new photo has emerged that shows a sign that Barnes & Noble stores will be using to advertise an upcoming NOOK Simple Touch reader that will also have a new display with a front-light.

The “GlowLight” technology, as advertised by Barnes & Noble is different from an LCD screen because an LCD screen is backlit. Since the NOOK sports an eInk screen, light cannot be behind the screen or else you won’t be able to read the text, thus the use of a front-lit display.

There is no official release date of the new NOOK, but sources say that it is geared for a Thursday launch, perhaps tomorrow, but more likely next Thursday.
