OnLive Launches App for iOS and Android, Brings Console Class Games to Tablets

Cloud gaming company OnLive has just launched a free app that allows games instant access to their favorite console-class games on tablets and smartphones via Wi-Fi and 4G LTE.

OnLiveCurrently the app offers a selection of 25 games that have been adapted for touch-screen devices, such as the iPad, iPhone and Android tablets and smartphones. The games include Rockstar Games’ LA Noire, which now features native touch control, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame, which will be given free to anyone who downloads the OnLive app.

While the app is available now, we spent some time with OnLive at E3 earlier this year. We only got a chance to play the full version of Virtual Tennis thanks to its simple touch controls, though nonetheless, the game certainly exceeded anything available for the iPad in terms of computing resources. With little lag time and a steady connection over Wi-Fi, the game played exceptionally well, though we weren’t a fan of the on-screen touch pad.

Fortunately, OnLive has also released a universal OnLive wireless controller that will work with almost all of the nearly 200 games in OnLive’s library, however, some games will not be available for the new app due to licensing agreements between the cloud gaming company and the publishers. The controller retails for $49.99 and will be available soon. For existing OnLive subsribers will be able to access their all purchased games on the new iOS and Android apps.
