The 128GB version of the Microsoft Surface Pro has been in very short supply since this Windows 8 tablet launched a week ago. The Microsoft Store is now taking orders for units that will ship early next month.

Microsoft Surface ProThe device can be ordered online now, and it will ship on or before March 1. When Microsoft runs out of that shipment, the status will change to “Out of Stock”.

According to a post on the official Surface Blog, Best Buy has received a fresh shipment of units, but a survey of stores in the Atlanta area did not turn up a single location with the Surface Pro 128GB in stock. Still, customers can put in a reservation at a Best Buy retail store for this tablet.

Storage Matters

The 64GB version of the Surface Pro is not in short supply. It can be ordered for immediate shipment. The 128GB version is likely the most poplar because it offers so much more built-in storage capacity — because Windows 8 Pro takes up so much, the 128GB version has about 90GB of storage available to users, while the 64GB has only about 30GB.

For extra storage of files, users can get a 64GB microSDXC memory card for either version.

More Details

The Surface Pro has a 10.6-inch screen, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It includes a full-size USB 3.0 port, plus a Mini DisplayPort that can drive an external display up to 2560 x 1440 pixels.

This tablet is built around an Intel Core i5 processor with 4GB of RAM. Because it uses Windows 8 Pro, it is able to run software written for Windows 7 and earlier, in addition to apps written specifically for this new Microsoft operating system.

The device comes with a stylus dubbed “the Surface pen”, which has Palm Block technology. It is not, however, bundled with a Touch Cover or Type Cover. These will be sold separately, at $120 and $130, respectively. Additional accessories for this tablet are in development.
