PlayBook owners can breathe a sigh of relief: rather than being obsolete, this tablet is going to get a major upgrade to the next version of the BlackBerry operating system.

BlackBerry PlayBookThe PlayBook was unveiled back in 2010 as a companion device for BlackBerry smartphones. In the intervening years, it never found much of an audience.

But it’s not being abandoned. BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said “Our plan is to upgrade all existing PlayBooks to BlackBerry 10” during the announcement of this new operating system.

Everything Old Is New Again

Actually, PlayBook users might find many aspects of the new operating system to be familiar. In his hands-on preview of BlackBerry 10 written for Brighthand, Jamison Cush described it as “strikingly similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS”.

As Cush pointed out, neither supports softkeys or control buttons, and all navigation is swipe-based. And both are based on the QNX operating system.

Heins did not give specifics on when an upgrade to BlackBerry 10 for the PlayBook can be expected. He also didn’t say anything about his company developing new tablets.
