Retailers Slash Price for BlackBerry PlayBook

It appears the BlackBerry PlayBook is getting another price cut, this time from multiple retailers.

BlackBerry PlayBookIn an effort to increase unimpressive sales of the tablet, Staples has slashed $200 off the price of the 16, 32 and 64GB models. The office supplier is offering customers $100 in instant savings plus $100 rebate on a Visa prepaid card. Office Depot also offered a similar deal, with customers getting $100 of the PlayBook’s orginal price and then another $100 off thanks to a rebate.

Best Buy’s current sale prices for the QNX-based tablet line up with Staples and Office Depot, though the electronics retailer is advertising its new prices as a limited-time sale that ends Oct. 6. Earlier this month, Best Buy offered the 64GB model for $550, a $150 less than its MSRP.

According to a report from BGR, Walmart is currently offering an unadvertised sale on the 16GB, with the tablet ringing up at $250.

At launch, the BlackBerry PlayBook retailed for $499 and $599 for the 16GB and 32GB versions, respectively. Price cuts from multiple retail partners could mean the PlayBook is on the verge of a fire sale, as RIM reported just 200,000 units shipped into channels during the tablet’s first full quarter of availability.
