RIM CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed that RIM will release a 4G BlackBerry PlayBook in 2012. Speaking during a Q and A session at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Heins claimed, “We will bring a 4G PlayBook to market this year.”
The comment follows news that a 4G LTE PlayBook had been “confirmed” earlier at the conference during a press event, though RIM never made a formal announcement.
Heins did not disclose if the 4G PlayBook will support LTE, nor did he mention any further details. He also had no firm comments regarding a follow-up PlayBook tablet. However, RIM earlier confirmed the PlayBook will receive the update to BlackBerry 10 when it ships later this year.
RIM announced plans for a 4G WiMAX PlayBook for Sprint at CES 2011, but plans were later scuttled following poor device sales.
