RIM Developing BlackBerry Tablet

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM is working on a BlackBery tablet computer, and though the device is in early development, it could be released by the end of the year.

RIMThe story credits “people familiar with RIM’s plans” who claim the tablet will not have its own connection and will instead tether to a BlackBerry, essentially making it a BlackBerry with a bigger screen.

The report clearly states RIM is “testing” and “experimenting” with the device, suggesting that release of the BlackBerry tablet is far from certain.

A BlackBerry tablet could help RIM compete in the apps market, particularly with productivity suites and business applications that could take advantage of increased screen real estate. Currently RIM’s app market offers approximately 7,000 apps, compared with more than 200,000 in the Apple App Store.

The news comes as RIM is set to release a new smartphone operating system – BlackBerry OS 6.0, unveiled in April – that emulates many of the iPhone’s popular touch gestures and user interface features.

Update: Boy Genius Report claimed last month that their sources indicated the tablet screen will be 8.9 inches. Also, RIM was developing a monochrome tablet similar to an eReader but scrapped those plans following the iPad announcement.
