Supposedly, Google is working on two new versions of its Nexus 7 tablet that will be thinner and use TN displays from Taiwanese manufacturer HannStar Display, according to “industry sources.” One of these two new tablets will be priced at $199, while the other, presumably with lower specs, will be priced at $99. The sources added that both of the new Nexus 7 tablet models are expected to be available before the end of 2012.
If this is actually the case, it would appear that this is an attempt by Google to head off the competition from Apple, which reportedly has plans to release a 7.85-inch “iPad Mini” sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Aside from the fact that the DigiTimes is not the most reputable source, Asustek has also denied the reports, putting their legitimacy into question. But only time will tell; the fourth quarter of 2012 is just around the corner, so if there’s any truth to these rumors, Google is bound to make some sort of announcement about new Nexus 7 models sooner rather than later.
