On the weekend before the September 2nd unveiling at IFA, more Samsung Galaxy Tab details have emerged that suggest the Android tablet is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone and that it may run on a CDMA network.
Galaxy Tab in Israel
Israeli tech blog Gadgety posted pictures of the Galaxy Tab in the wild, taken by a member of the Israeli Android forum iAndroid. In one picture, a seemingly prototype tablet device is clearly labeled “Samsung [space] Tab CDMA” with an individual’s thumb covering what could obviously be the word “Galaxy.”
In another post, the same user claims the device feels great in hand, works very fast and has exceptional multitouch controls. He also claims the Galaxy Tab is very similar to the Galaxy S, sports a very strong speaker, Flash “works like a dream,” and the Tab has good call quality. His only complaint is that the GPS is a little slow, but otherwise works perfectly.
A Seven-Inch Phone?
The post is one of the first to reveal the Samsung Galaxy Tab may double as a cell phone, albeit a very large smartphone. The Galaxy Tab’s seven-inch diagonal display will be two-inches larger than the Dell Streak, which many consider a tablet, and 2.7-inches larger than the 4.3-inch EVO 4G. The iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch screen.
Despite the large size, it isn’t that farfetched that Samsung would add a call feature. It’s been reported that Google will deny a license for their Android Marketplace application to devices that do not meet certain hardware standards. Being that Google conceived Android as a mobile OS, many believe one standard is voice-calling capability. That is also the reason many current Android tablets do not have embedded access to the Android Market.
Coming to Verizon or Sprint?
If the US Galaxy Tab is a CDMA device, it could run on either the Verizon or Sprint 3G network. Both carriers support many Android-powered Samsung phones, including the Epic 4G (Sprint) and a Verizon variant of the Samsung Galaxy S phone, the Samsung Fascinate.
This isn’t the first time Verizon has been mentioned as a possible Galaxy Tab carrier. Earlier this month, a leaked Verizon product road map referred to a Samsung tablet as an upcoming Verizon device, though did not specifically mention the Galaxy Tab.
Peripherals Found Online
In related Galaxy Tab news, OLED-Display.net is claiming they’ve discovered a number of Galaxy Tab accessories on tucked away on a Samsung website with prices in Euros. The peripherals include a leather case (€41, $52), charging station with HDMI and speaker ports (€54, $68), 83-key keyboard (€82, $104), USB adapter, car kit (€48, $61), AVI TV adapter (€20, $25), and white and black earphones, suggesting the Tab, which has only been seen in black in leaked photos and the teaser video, could also be available in white.
Update: Add a Bluetooth pen, G-Switch impact case, screen protector, USB port adapter and two G-Band cases to the accessory list.
OLED-Display.net posted the additional items, with the most interesting being the Bluetooth pen. According to the site, pen doubles as a stylus and a multi-device Bluetooth receiver, meaning a user will be able to conceivable use it pick up incoming calls with any Bluetooth enabled cell phone.
Another Spec Leak
OLED-Display.net also reported on another leaked spec sheet for the Android tablet, this time posted on the India-based FlipKart, which is an online retailer similar to Amazon.
FlipKart reportedly briefly listed the device before pulling it down, but not before OLED-Display could copy the technical specs, which are in line with previous leaks outside of the display resolution. Others have reported an 800 x 400 pixel display.
