Samsung’s answer to the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Apple iPad Pro is the newly-announced Galaxy TabPro S, a slim 2-in-1 tablet designed to appeal to prosumers. It will run Windows 10 on an Intel Core M processor, and sport a 12-inch AMOLED display.

In recent months, much of the attention in the tablet market has gone to models with add-on keyboards and screens large enough that even a businessperson could use them as a laptop. The TabPro S will be Samsung’s entry in this race.

It will set itself apart from the pack by being very thin and light: at just 0.25 inches and 1.53 pounds it will be slimmer and lighter than either the Surface Pro 4 or the iPad Pro.

Samsung’s upcoming model will also boast an Super AMOLED display, a type that offers brighter, more vivid colors than traditional LCDs in a thinner, lighter formfactor.

Unlike Microsoft strategy with the SP4, there will be a minimal number of possible configurations for the TabPro S. It will run Windows 10 Pro or Home on a dual-core, 2.2GHz sixth-gen Intel Core M3-6Y30 processor with 4GB of RAM. Buyers will be able to choose between a 128GB or 256GB SSD.

Whether to get 4G LTE will be another option, but all versions will come with WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS.

Thanks to its USB Type-C port, Samsung says the Galaxy TabPro S’s battery can fully charge in 2.5 hours, and go for up to 10.5 hours on a charge.

The removable keyboard for the TabPro S will also function as a folio case, protecting the front and back of the tablet. There will be room for a full-size keyboard and trackpad.  When the user is typing, this case will prop up the device, but will offer only two viewing angles.

There will be an optional Bluetooth stylus pen offered. Microsoft bundles a pen with the SP4, but the Apple Pencil is an optional extra for the iPad Pro.

The Samsung TabPro S is scheduled to be released in the first few months of this year, but there is no word yet about what it will cost.

The iPad Pro starts at $799 and the SP4 at $899, and Samsung’s offering is likely to be in the same range.

The cost in the US is $899.00. I don’t know what the cost will be for me in Canada.
