Samsung Prepping Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Tab 3 Plus Tablets

While much of Samsung’s recent focus has been on its Galaxy Note series, the company hasn’t given up on the Galaxy Tab series of tablets. Two new models are reportedly in the offing.

The Galaxy Tab 2 series debuted last spring, and a Galaxy Tab 3 series is allegedly not all that far away. According to an unconfirmed report from Sammobile, updated versions will be out in the second half of this year.

There are two models in the current series, one with a 7-inch display, and another with a 10.1-inch screen. At this point, it’s not clear if the company intends to offer the same screen sizes in the follow-up versions.

The Tab 3 models will allegedly use Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa processor, which has two sets of four processors, one set for high-demand applications and a second one to save power when demand is lower.

A Plus Model

One of these tablets will allegedly be the Galaxy Tab 3 Plus. This will have either a 10.1-inch or an 11.6-inch Super AMOLED screen, with a 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) resolution.

Super AMOLED screens are thinner than standard AMOLED screens, allowing for faster touch response and greater viewing angles.

Display makers have had a hard time making Super AMOLED displays in such high resolutions, but reports indicate that Samsung is serious about making its tablets more competitive with Apple’s iPad, and using a Super AMOLED screen could be part of this. Samsung makes its own displays, so if any one company could pull this off, Samsung could.

The first of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 models will reportedly be released at the IFA 2013 in early September.
