One of the most popular online chat apps is now available for the most popular tablet, as Skype has finally come to the iPad. Skype for the Apple iPad is not much different other versions of the chat app, which enables voice, text, and face-to-face video messaging over both Wi-Fi and 3G, though face-to-face video chat is limited to the iPad 2 as the original iPad does not have an on-board camera. Original iPad owners can still receive video chats featuring one-way video.
With the Skype iPad app, users can call, text, and video chat with other Skype users for free, or buy Skype credits to call landlines and set up a personal Skype number. Contacts will automatically load into the Skype iPad app for those with existing accounts.
Skype is currently available for PC, Mac, some HDTVs and iOS devices running version 4.0 or later, which includes the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, as well as the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch.
The Skype app for the iPad was made available prematurely available last night, but was quickly pulled. However, TabletPCReview was able to download the morning of August 2.
