At this point, it will be news when Apple has a lousy quarter, because for the first three months of 2012, the Mac maker absolutely killed it in total revenue and profits. Oh, and it sold a bunch of iPads and iPhones.
Apple total revenue for the quarter was $39.2 billion, and net profit hit $11.6 billion, no doubt buoyed by strong iPad and iPhone sales. Though the third-generation iPad has only been available for approximately one month, Apple still managed to sell 11.8 million iPads, which is an increase of 151% over this time last year. However, sales are down from the holiday quarter in which Apple sold 15.43 million units.
Apple has sold 67 million iPads since the product launched 24 months ago. According to Tim Cook, it took Apple 24 years to sell as many Mac computers, 5 years to sell as many iPods, and 3 years to sell as many iPhones.
Apple iPhone sales were strong this quarter as Apple sold 35.1 million units. Apple also sold 4 million Mac computers and 7.7 million iPods.
A year ago at this time, revenue was $24.7 billion, and profit just $6 billion.
