After showing off a prototype tablet at both CES and MWC 2012, Toshiba has officially announced the release of the Excite tablet series that is set to include a 10-inch, 7.7-inch, and a 13-inch model.

The three Excite tablets will run Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS (4.0) as feature quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processors. Each tablet display will be covered by Corning Gorilla Glass to prevent cracks and scratches. Additionally, the tablets will have 1GB of RAM and will sport a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing shooter, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, and will include a selection of built-in ports including a microUSB, microHDMI, and a full-sized SD card slot.

True to its name, the Toshiba Excite 10 will have a 10.1-inch screen, and will feature an AutoBrite LED Backlit display with 1280 x 800 resolution and 10-finger multi-touch support. It will measure at 0.35-inches thin and will weigh in at just 1.32 pounds.

It’s larger cousin, in fact, the largest brand name Android tablet to date is a 13-inch version of the Excite tablet. Yes, you read that correctly: an unusually large 13-inch tablet. Actually, the display will be 13.3-inches, also with AutoBrite LED backlighting and  a 1600 x 900 native resolution, which is actually less than the smaller third-generation iPad (2048 x 1536) and some of the new 10.1-inch Android tablets (1920 x 1200). Surprisingly enough, the Toshiba Excite 13 will measure at 0.4-inches thin and will weigh 2.2 pounds. The 13.3-inch version of the Excite was recently featured at a tablet TV event in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, but there is no word from Toshiba if the Excite 13 will ship with a TV tuner.

On the opposite end of the screen-size spectrum is the Excite 7.7. It will be the first Toshiba tablet to feature an AMOLED display, which will be 7.7-inches. It will measure at 0.3-inches and will weigh 13.4 ounces on its launch.

Toshiba promises at least 10 hours of battery life for all of the tablets, with the Excite 10 and 13 pushing up to 13 hours.

The pricing and availability are different for each tablet:

  • The Excite 10 tablet will launch on May 6 for $449.99 for the 16GB model, $529.99 for the 32GB model, and $649.99 for the 64GB version.
  • The Excite 7.7 tablet will be available on June 10 for $499.99 for the 16GB model and $579.99 for the 32GB one.
  • The Excite 13 tablet will be ready for purchase also on June 10 for $649.99 for the 32GB version and $749.99 for the 64GB model.

We were able to get a hands-on look at the Toshiba Excite 7.7 at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona this past February.
