Toshiba Releases Pre-configured Core Duo Tablet PC – “M405”

Looks like consumers will be able to purchase a preconfigured Core Duo Toshiba M400 Tablet PC. Today Toshiba announced this specific flavor of the M400 as a retail release. This model is called the M400. The model is expected to show up in retail stores along with Lenovo Tablet PCs. Read more.

IRVINE, Calif. (April 11, 2006) — Toshiba’s Digital Products Division, a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (TAIS), today announced the Port g M405-S8003, a high-performance, thin and light Tablet PC sold at major consumer electronics stores nationwide with an estimated single unit price of less than $2,0001.

Featuring business-level performance and mobility, the Port g M405-S8003 weighs approximately 4.5 pounds2 and is designed for consumers who require on-demand business applications and all the functionality of a notebook computer with the benefits of digital pen-based input and control. 

The Port g M405-S8003 features the new Intel Core Duo processor3 T2400 that reduces power consumption while boosting overall performance from graphics to wireless capabilities.  The Port g M405-S8003 also features EasyGuard technology4, a series of hardware and software enhancements designed to help boost mobile security, system integrity, network connectivity and overall ease-of-use. 

The Port g M405-S8003 offers a bright, 12.1-inch XGA diagonal display that easily switches into “slate” mode so users can stay productive at their desk, standing, in a meeting or lounging at home.  With the Port g M405-S8003, users can use the mouse, keyboard, digital-ink-enabled pen or their voice to manipulate information and maximize productivity.

Toshiba’s exclusive EasyGuard technology4 consists of four elements with the following feature highlights:

Protect & Fix
         Shock-absorbing materials to help safeguard critical components such as the hard drive and LCD display;

         the Toshiba Hard Disk Drive Protection System to help safeguard the Tablet PC’s hard drive against possible damage resulting from accidental dropping, turbulence, impact or vibration; 

         enhanced, spill-resistant keyboard5 that affords users time to save work and shut down the system.  If an accident should occur, this feature will help prevent the loss of data; 

Secure
         a Trusted Platform Module, an embedded security chipset that stores encryption keys, passwords and user credentials to ensure that data cannot be accessed or seen by anyone but an authorized user; 

         integrated biometric fingerprint reader with single sign-on functionality; 

Connect
         a complete suite of communication technologies, including Gigabit Ethernet, V.92 modem and the Intel PRO/Wireless6 3945ABG Network Connection (802.11 a/b/g); 

         proprietary technologies such as Toshiba’s recently upgraded ConfigFree , a graphic connectivity management utility, and the company’s patented Diversity Antenna, designed to deliver superior, wireless signal reception through the integration of strategically placed Bluetooth technology and dual-band Wi-Fi antennas in the notebook’s display;

The Port g M405-S8003 comes with a six-cell battery7 for up to five hours of computing time.  Toshiba also equipped the Port g M405-S8003 with a swappable Ultra SlimBay for a CD-RW/DVD, DVD SuperMulti optical drives or a second hard drive for onboard data backup. 

The Port g M405-S8003 notebook offers a standard one-year limited warranty8. This warranty includes carry-in support at Authorized Service Providers throughout the country, or the customer may use any of the more than 3,000 UPS Stores for packaging and delivery of the product to a centralized depot for prompt service turnaround. Customers can also choose to upgrade the notebook’s service plans, including up to four years of extended service plans.
