As promised, the Toshiba Thrive is now available for pre-order from a number of vendors, as the Android tablet continues its procession to the market as scheduled.
Toshiba has posted links on its website for interested users to pre-order the Thrive directly from the manufacturer, or from a selection of other retailers that will carry the device. Prices start at $430 (for the 8 GB model), with $480 (16 GB) and $580 (32 GB) options available.
Aside from Toshiba, Amazon.com, Office Depot, and ToshibaDirect.com will all take pre-orders for the Android 3.1 Thrive, with shipments of the device planned to begin this July.
Toshiba Thrive Tech Specs
The Toshiba Thrive has three unique features that set it apart from the majority of the current Honeycomb crop. It will have a removable battery (almost unheard of in a modern consumer-grade tablet), feature Swype technology in its touchscreen keyboard, and feature a full-sized USB 2.0 port. The majority of tablets available only offer a microUSB port, and the usefulness of this port is greatly increased by the newfound ability for Android tablets to act as USB hosts in Honeycomb 3.1.
Looking past the highlights above, the Thrive has the standard hardware one has come to expect in a device running Google’s OS. It will come with the latest version of Honeycomb (Android 3.1), feature a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 display, and be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. As of this writing, there are no plans for the Thrive to have any type of 3G or 4G connection.
The Thrive will be available from the retailers listed above, as well as Office Max, Best Buy, RadioShack, and hhgregg, when it goes on sale later this summer.
