Atempo, Inc. announced that the University of Miami (UM) will be providing a laptop backup service to its students powered by Atempo LiveBackup. This service, called “myUMbackup,” is the brainchild of the UM IT department and was developed to take the burden of backups off of students and provide campus-wide data protection for five geographically dispersed campuses and research labs.

These continuous, automatic backups are invisible to students and protect data on and off-campus, which is why UM chose LiveBackup. Students dont want to be bothered with backups. They dont want to see the backups or even talk about backups, and with LiveBackup they dont have to and that is the beauty of it, said Freddie Robinson, executive director of technical operations at University of Miami. The myUMbackup service provides subscribers with the following:

  • Real-time, transparent backups. LiveBackup works quietly in the background, best compared to experiences with modern anti-virus applications; end-users are aware of LiveBackup only during recovery operations.
  • On and off-campus data protection. UM has a large commuter population and a high priority for this project was being able to provide data protection from any location, both on and off campus.
  • Self-serve file recoveries. Students can easily retrieve lost or accidentally deleted papers and projects by simply clicking on an icon in the task bar tray. Up to 20 versions of all data files are available for recovery.
  • Safe and secure central repository. Laptop data is saved to a safe and secure central data repository on campus and students can access their data 24 hours a day from any location with an Internet connection.

LiveBackup is designed to run quietly in the background for the end-user, the IT administrator and the network. These crucial elements let the university run an innovative backup service that is transparent to the students and the network, and is easy to manage. In fact UM reports that it takes about as long to make a cup of coffee as it does to manage the LiveBackup server per week.
