Carrying an tablet around without some kind of case isn’t a good idea, but finding the right balance between added protection and bulk is a personal decision.
The STM Studio for iPad Air is a case that falls in the middle of the possibilities, not too large or heavy while providing a moderate amount of shielding.
Build and Design
This is a folio case, so it wraps completely around the tablet. The main shell is made of a rigid polycarbonate that covers the back and sides. There are openings to give access to the power button, headset jack, microphone, volume buttons, speakers, and Lightning port.
There is a slightly less rigid flap that covers the iPad Air‘s display, but can be flipped around to the back to get it out of the way. The main shell is always black, but the flap comes in red, black, lime, and purple.
The STM Studio is very practical looking, but its plasticky appearance keeps it from being particularly fashionable.
It weighs in at half a pound — about the weight you’d expect for a moderately-protective case like this one.
The cover wraps around not just the front of the case but also around the far side, where it holds onto the back with magnets. This means it isn’t likely to come open accidentally. Closing the cover automatically turns the iPad off, while opening it turns it back on.
Those magnets built into the flap have an additional purpose: they allow the cover to be reconfigured into a stand by wrapping the flap around to the back and then affixing the magnets in the flap to magnets in the middle of the shell.
In this shape, it can hold the iPad up to make a miniature movie screen for watching any kind of video. Flipping the iPad around, the Studio holds the iPad up at a much shallower angle, suitable for typing or drawing on the screen.
The STM Studio is lined — front and back — with microsuede for a bit of padding, and also to keep the case itself from scratching the iPad.
The STM Studio for iPad Air is easily capable of protecting the tablet from everyday bumps and scratches. And it can go a bit beyond that — the device is almost completely wrapped in a rigid shell, so it can take a moderate amount of punishment.
The STM Studio is well-designed case for protecting Apple’s iPad Air from scratches and dents and perhaps even a cracked screen, while also serving as a multi-purpose stand. It’s not overly attractive, but it’s available in four color schemes, and it’s reasonably lightweight.
This product sells for $45, which makes it lower priced than similar cases from rival companies.
